Mental health is very important to me. There are a few very important people in my life who suffer from depression or other mental health illnesses. I’m not just talking about the occasional blues, but clinically diagnosed depression. Sometimes a combination of medication plus in-person psychotherapy can help, sometimes that’s not enough, sometimes that comes with its own side effects that makes life harder. My point being, mental illness is complicated. Just like any other illness. There is no one size fits all solution, but with compassion, education and understanding, we do the best we can – both those struggling and those who love them. And even though I have never truly struggled with a mental illness, I have found relief through psychotherapy in the past.
NoStigmas is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization founded in 2011. Their mission is to erase the stigmas that are associated with mental illness and suicide while concurrently providing support to those who struggle with mental illness. NoStigmas strives to make a positive impact in the mental health community by providing educational materials, access to Chicago’s largest free mental health resource database, and access to free virtual peer mentorship services.
