If you don’t like the weather in Chicago …

… wait 5 minutes. Or is it 15? I have literally experienced a 20-degree temperature drop in Chicago in the span of 5-10 minutes. But today it was crazy rain.

I don’t think it rained all day today. Then, 10 minutes before I have to leave the office to catch my train, it starts pouring. Because the first leg of my commute home is a reverse commute, and the trains don’t run as frequently, I don’t wait around. I had no choice but to run the quarter mile to the train station in the rain. I had an umbrella, but no suitable rain coat or shoes. By the time I got to the station, the front of my pants and my shoes were soaked. What a great way to start a 2 hour commute home.

But by the time the train pulled into Chicago, the rain had stopped. So I walked to my next train. And by the time that train was halfway home … the sun was out. The clouds were gone. Where the heck was I?

Luckily, I had my new shoes waiting at home for me. AND, bonus, my recent Groupon Goods order with my favorite performance toe socks had arrived. And as luck would have it, two of the pairs match my new shoes.

Come on. Tell me that’s not fun.

So, with the rain gone, and my new shoes and socks (and sports bra – MovingComfort.com is having a great sale on last season’s sports bra colors, including my favorite bra, the Phoebe), I was able to get in a nice run. Day = Improved.

  1. Rainy days are only nice when you don’t have to leave your house. I’ve learned my lesson (the hard way like you) and always bring an umbrella with me to work.

I’ve been searching for Injinji socks all over and am wondering – do you only purchase them online? I think I’ll just have to do the same. I’ve wanted a pair ever since you recommended them to me months ago!

    1. I have only ever purchased them online, and only when I can find a good deal. If you sign up for their email list, they’ll let you know when they have a sale on their web site. It doesn’t happen often, so I always jump on it when it does. I don’t think I’ve ever seen them for sale in a store. Maybe at a race expo, but I’m not sure.

  2. Ugh! I hate it when I HAVE to be somewhere and it’s pouring. I once showed up at the doctor’s office looking like a drowned rat after booking it there in the rain. I asked them for a towel and they said they didn’t have any! What??

        1. The bathrooms at the new Millenium Station are nice – they even have fresh flowers! Everyday! But all other Metra station bathrooms in my experience have been sad places.

  3. Ugh, I hate sitting soaked on the train. Especially when the AC is on!

We were driving home from ORD late Monday night and it would pour then quit… then pour… then quit. So bizarre!

  4. The real question is: Would you rather have the temperature go up 20 degrees while running, or go down 20 degrees, while running?

(although you have to wonder what would make it shoot up….fire rain?)
